I would also pay little attention to paragraphs and would move to a next paragraph not with the intention of making a different point but to prevent the paragraphs from becoming too big. Similarly, I would also have little or no plan for research and would pick resources on the basis of convenience rather than source credibility or relevance to the paper. I would also rarely think about the potential audience of my paper.
This does not show that you’ve put forth any effort. In fact, writing that summary took me under a minute, with little thought. While this may be a perfectly good summary of this scene, it doesn’t offer any additional insight into the film. My summary simply regurgitates what happened, play-by-play. There’s really no point in reading this summary; instead, you could just watch the scene and learn everything I just discussed, and you’ll have more fun doing it. You need to understand the difference between commentary and summary. While both writing styles can be used to discuss another piece of work , this is about the sum total of their similarities.
You are going to need at least two sentences of commentary for every detail sentence. A good rule of thumb is that your commentary should be twice as long as your details. We want to know how YOU think these facts prove your point and what YOU think they mean. Your title should be catchy to grab the reader’s attention. In a literary commentary, avoid using first-person pronouns . Each of them is unique and has characteristics that students need to be familiar with before writing.
I’m going to give both summary and commentary on a scene from my favorite movie of all time, Shaun of the Dead. But, as soon as you turn this essay in, if you haven’t seen it already, watch it! Go back and look at step two of writing details from last week’s blog. Look at the commentary you wrote and update it to fit into the “what and why” method using some of the above types of commentary. If you did not do that step last week, go ahead and use the worksheet found here. When you write commentary, you are explaining to your reader how the details relate to the thesis statement. Instead, they help explain why the details are relevant to the topic.

- Similarly, I would also have little or no plan for research and would pick resources on the basis of convenience rather than source credibility or relevance to the paper.
- Commentary essays are based exclusively on sound judgments and evidence in order to convince the reader.
The subject of the essay, containing a controversial nature, can interest more. In the central part of writing, you must express all the pros and cons, analyze all possible points of view and «make the final conviction» — highlight what you think is more important. The «This shows that» device.Write a topic sentence with evidence. And start the next sentence with the words «this shows that». This method really works because it makes the student explain the quote from the text. For example, in the poem «Night Wind» Dewdney portrays a guy holding a wire.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this particular commentary is that George A. Romero did not create it intentionally. The character was not written to be black, so the charged racial connotation of the ending only arose after casting Duane Jones in the lead role.
A paragraph with textual evidence can still be merely plot summary, and it’s important to show students examples of this trap so that they can avoid it in their writing. The commentary four-square is an activity in which students take a piece of paper and divide it into four squares. The top-right square contains the blended quotation. The bottom squares contain a sentence of commentary each. You can find more about this concept along with a free download of the template by clicking here. The idea of having students “map out” a “chunk” of analysis helps them to see each distinct portion as well as how it all fits together. I like to have students complete these in groups and then have groups share them using the ELMO device.

I also wrote the paper well because I tried to anticipate the arguments that could be made by the opponents. This helped me incorporate effective counterarguments and also sent the message to the audience that I had considered both sides of the underlying issue before adopting a position. Before I took the course, I would almost never write initial drafts or outlines. My first draft would also be my final draft and I would rarely proofread the paper.
Taking the course has helped me address several weaknesses I used to have in writing. Of all the papers I wrote, I consider “DNA Database and Human Rights” to be the best because it reflects several lessons I have learnt in the course. First of all, the paper showed that I took a carefully planned approach to sources for the paper. I made sure that the authors of the sources were professionally credible and
